HOW TO VIEW SVG files for Windows 7- 64 bit

I use SVG files (or Scalable Vector Files) with my Sure Cuts A Lot (SCAL) program for cutting images from files rather than using Cricut Cartridges.  However, since upgrading to Windows 7, I have not found a suitable “fix” for viewing the SVG files in Windows picture viewer.  Even though “SCAL” let me view the files, I can only view them one at a time, and the image is rather small.  I want to be able to view and organize my files without opening SCAL.

“InfranView” a free photo editor I already used for resizing photos, can be used to preview SVGs !  The trick is downloading the correct plugin for it. I tried the “download all current plugins” .  I  and also searched for “svg” on their site and found the exact plug-in that was required.  I installed both of these to be sure I had it!  Some people seem to do the “all” option and still don’t have it, so I did both.

After getting Infranview open, click “thumnails” under “file” menu.  Navigate to your files.   Under “options” you can make your thumbnails as large or as small as you want, and change your background colors.

You can also open an svg in your file folder, then select, under file properties, Infranview to always open this type of file.  You can view images one at a time this way, and larger than in SCAL.

When inside the thunbnail Infranview viewer, you can can view ALL cut files in one folder, you can tell it to include all subfolders so you can see even all the images in your sorted SVGs at one time (as if they are not sorted by file), and you can organize, rename, and copy files into folders to organize.  You can also delete unwanted files.

I could not find a way to create blank files in Infranfiew Thumbnail for creating NEW folders.  A workaround for this is to create “new folders” in your Windows file manager, then just re-open Infranview and rename the “new folders” folders to whatever name you want as you need them.

I upgraded to Windows 7 about four weeks ago and this is the closest I’ve gotten to functionality with my svg files.  Very excited, though I wish Windows would get their act together and just support the file type.

Good luck!

FREE SVG Cut File for SCAL: Label 1 (MaggieSVGs)

I made this card this week for a young man who is battling some cancer.  I wanted to send an encouraging card, and I wanted it to be simple in design.

The paper seemed perfect to convey what I wanted to say, and the Christopher Reeves “JustRight Stampers” sentiment was wonderful:  ”Once you choose HOPE, anything’s possible.”  The stamped frame is also from JustRite stampers.

The matting elements were made with SVG label cut files I created using SCAL and my Cricut.  The top circle was cut and embossed with circle nestability dies.

Okay, so I’m going to try to share a file that goes with this card.  I know you all are as excited as I am that I made something and get to share it if you own Cricut and use SCAL software to cut things (rather than cartidges, which is much more expensive).

Here goes…free cut file.  Click, download, open with SCAL, cut!

CREATE!  Yay!

(Somebody be so kind as to let me know if it worked?!)

Baby Album Using Cricut and Sure Cuts a Lot

A baby album with elements cut with my Cricut and Sure Cuts a Lot lately to make a first year baby album for my little niece for Christmas.

I found a great set of baby cut files by The Scrapping Table.  These files were bought with a subscription, however, there are tons of free files out there you can use with your SCAL cutting software and Cricut.  For this project, I just wanted to find files already grouped together for me, and I loved these.  All her files are well worth the small subscription fee.  The files are easy to use, stored by theme, and clean to cut.  I also enjoy the emails she sends out with links to how-tos on updates to the SCAL software as Craft Edge releases them.  I am not being paid to endorse her site, I just love it.

SLIDESHOW OF ENTIRE ALBUM:

My favorite adhesive so far for piecing is tape dot roller.  I just got a pink ATG gun on sale at Jo-Ann’s, so we’ll see how that goes.

INFO ON FALL .SVG FILES:

The autumn title (see slideshow above) is a free file from a cut file internet seller called www.svgcuts.com.  They also have great files for small charge bundled by theme (like cartridges), so that they are tested and easy to find.   I’ve bought several from there usually very reasonable prices with great sales (join their mailing list for free weekly files and promotions).  I created the Halloween title myself by welding letters together in SCAL with a pumpkin welded in the middle for the “O”.  The scarecrow is the most complex paper piecing I did, but I had made it for fun during some down time the previous fall–he was just waiting for a page!

SPRING SVG  FILES:.

The Easter embellishments are for her first Easter photos this spring.  Everyone who sees the cut embellishments can’t resist holding onto them and rubbing them for a while!   Even me.  We laugh at each other at our scrap group…you just have to hold them! You just can’t help but want to touch and hold them.   I know, it’s crazy, but textiles are just that way!

The donkey and cross are three layer file–they look great and were easy to assemble.

SCAL gets two thumbs up from me!

Fall Pumpkin Card Using Cricut and SCAL

I wanted to update and let you know some things I’m cutting with my Cricut lately using SCAL, or Sure Cuts a Lot Software in conjunction with my Cricut.  ”SCAL” is software which allows you to cut “.svg” files available for share free on the internet, any True Type Fonts (abbreviated TTF in the file names), OR many .jpg photo files!   Wow.  I know.  It’s just nuts.  You only need the cartridge that came with your machine inserted into it, and a connection to your computer…and they walk you through all that easy peasy!

To make this card with my Cricut and SCAL, I downloaded this cut file from Cheeky Magpie called “Filigree Pumpkin“.  I opened it using “import SVG” function in my Sure Cuts a Lot software, then sized it to the size of a card.  I then cut the filigree portion using Core-Dinations cardstock (my fav!), and cut a “blackout shadow” of the pumpkin for the orange background.  Then, I just matted, used some corner punches and a Martha Stewart punch, and finished it off with a JustRite sentiment, Nestability slide, ribbon, and gems!  I wanted a little more dimension to the flourishes on the pumpkin, so I traced with a gold gel pen.

I am loving my Cricut for holiday times!  I can’t wait to post some more of my projects for the holidays to share with you.  If you are interested in learning more about SCAL, be sure to check out the links here or  in the sidebar for their website. I hope you liked the card, and thanks for looking!

PS…I challenge you to do a web search for any holiday image in your mind you may want to cut and search for “svg cut file [name of your image]“.  See what will be available to you immediately to cut!

Magnanimity (derived from the Latin roots magn- great, and anima, soul) is the virtue of being great of mind and heart. It encompasses, usually, a refusal to be petty, a willingness to face danger, and actions for noble purposes. Its antithesis is pusillanimity. Both terms were coined by Aristotle, who called magnanimity "the crowning virtue."

Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of the American Language defines Magnanimity as such:

MAGNANIM'ITY, n. [L. magnanimitas; magnus, great, and animus, mind.] Greatness of mind; that elevation or dignity of soul, which encounters danger and trouble with tranquillity and firmness, which raises the possessor above revenge, and makes him delight in acts of benevolence, which makes him disdain injustice and meanness, and prompts him to sacrifice personal ease, interest and safety for the accomplishment of useful and noble objects.[1] (Source: Wikipedia)

Please know that I am not posting as an expert, but as a fellow traveler. I recommend that you research and double check things on your own before taking any advice or instruction from this site.  Information is given in good faith for the time period in which it was written. I am also an affiliate of the Sure Cuts A Lot software, for Cricut, which means you don't need Cricut cartridges to cut any font or .jpg on your computer.  I get some pocket change for introducing you if you choose to buy it by clicking on my site.  And we all know I need more cardstock, so I do appreciate it.  I sometimes review other products for a fee, but I am not required to give a positive review, and post honestly as to my experience.  I hope you find this useful.
