Font Addict Alert
There’s a sale going on this week at ScrapNFonts…all fonts are $1.
It’s so good a sale I’ve filtered my list three times, lost my shopping carts twice taking so long to pare down and decide. Finally narrowed it down to $20. ($60 normally).
I justified more fonts because I’m NOT buying Cricut cartridges…$30-$60 per font!
I found this weekend that my daughter’s cheap, short little gel pens work in my Cricut. I’m stocked. I made a really pretty card and envelope for an 80th birthday yesterday. I was so proud of how elegant it turned out.
I put in the envelope and let it write her name on the envelope in silver. It was so pretty. Nope…no picture, I was running late as it was!
BE INSPIRED! CREATE! ENCOURAGE! SHARE! SMILE!
Two Easter Layouts

Okay, so Designer Digitals was having this rocking contest where you could win an iPod nanochromatic. Seeing as how I left mine in the last hotel room we were in, or dropped it somewhere over spring break in Nashville, I was thinking I was bound for this contest.
I worked on it some this morning, taking a break from life, and wanting to scrap some Easter photos.
However, having finished, I realized the contest was over already.
I hate it when that happens!
On the up-side, there were some really great layouts to see.
I started with blocking, then decided to try some photo-merging (above).
Only one of the photos is used twice, so I think I can switch it out and have a two page layout ready for print? I’ll try to do that while files are open!

It was sunny, so it was easier to let her “look around at things” than to look up…her eyes hurt too much for that. But the sun made her dress glow, so I didn’t want to waste a pretty, clear day!
I’ll have to print and 8X8, but I can mount that on another layout for a 12X12 book if I want.

Ali Edwards, She Made My Day: Check out Shutterfly and Ali, A Sweet Combo
I am SO excited I might hyperventilate. I know. That’s saying something.
I know, I know, slow down, you can’t understand a word I’m about to say:
It goes like this…
Whew. INHALING.
My really good friend Ali (yeah, Ali returned my email once and answered a blog question…that makes us really good friends. If it doesn’t, hmmm, well, just keep your cotton pickin’ opinion to yourself and stop reading my occasionally lame blog. Wow. I feel so empowered).
Anyway, my really good friend Ali, who has a particular knack for waking up my creativity, has developed…whew, feeling giddy again…light-headed, need to breathe…a digital book-making process for Shutterfly.
Oh man, it ROCKS!
A couple years ago, I made one a rather plain for my Mom for her January birthday of our Christmas at her house, and I’m still her fav because of it. (Shh, don’t tell the other twerps I said that.)
(Yeah, I know you all read, just giggle and go on).
I think my really good friend Ali had made me a better blogger, too. I’ve been coached by a number of mentors to make Thanksgiving a bigger part of my life to push away depression, worry, doubt, and other “uglies”, but to set those to pictures and music and, oh my, COLOR? Now, it’s getting REALLY fun.
You couldn’t read one of My really good friend Ali‘s books and get a better foundation for becoming a “life artist”. And, hey, this is digital…you CAN do it! All the “art” is your own life! How cool is that?
Here is a full size picture of the pages for my really good friend Ali‘s book:

Here are links to my really good friend Ali‘s helpful tips (I probably need to let go of the repeats on that, lest she think I’m a stalker or something…not really, and no, I’m not hurt on not winning yesterday contest. We can still be really good friends):

It will run a minimum of $35.00 plus S&H, but my, you’d pay WAY more in scrapbook supplies to get it done “long-hand”. I’d pay that much in ink to just print 20 pp myself!
Alright, so I plan on being busy with this little project. If you make one, I WANTS TO SEE IT! I’m off to start on mine, Bloggites! Oh my, happy girl alert!
I Created My Own Handwriting FREE! to Celebrate Thanksgiving

I’ve been wanting to try this for a long time and will still play with my 30 Day Trial of FontCreator 5.6 to try to accomplish several of my own fonts I can use, including my signature. It’s not all that difficult, but tedius and time consuming.
I found the tutorial wich came with the program to be quite inadequate to learn to function in the program. But, after doing the full alphabet, I found an online tut to help with the symbols and number imports. Up until then, I was having to save each character to an individual file, then import it in. UGH. Turns out, you can copy and paste, you just have to be on the correct screen to do so. Glory!
My Tutorial and Tips:
I used a combination of a flatbed scanner set to high resolution, a felt tip Micron 02 Black Pen, a writing guide found on-line (just to keep letters to scale and separate from each other). I would like to try writing again on a pad rather than on the table to smooth out some marks, as recommended, but I forgot. I sort of like the pen look. I’d also like to use a light box and a slant guide. I’m not that picky, but it just saves some time later trying to get letters to match up correctly. Writing individually, it’s hard to remember if you are writing up-right, as in print, as opposed to the slant of cursive.
Most cursive hands on-line slant to the left, rather than correctly, to the right, and that bugs me, so I don’t use most of them. They need A BEKA curriculm, obviously.
I learned a few tips I’ll share for those interested in trying this for fun sometime when you have 7-8 hours to kill. {Llike I do, but I really wanted to try it. I’ll begin my cooking this afternoon, and fortunately, am not expecting company…nobody needs clean laundry for school! YEAH! It was worth celebrating. Did I mention I have a passion for letters? Yes, I know, it’s a little lame. I just love lettering, always have. Doodling in front of the TV for hours was my past-time as a kid, when I wasn’t learning to cross-stitch. I was totally born in the wrong century.
In any case, tips. For the most part, don’t “enter” into your o, n, m, y, i…just start as if writing in “print”. Then, remember to keep a slant line for italic lettering, and end with a swish, but not overly. The letters must connect sometimes. It’s unfortunate that you can’t program an ending letter separate from a connecting letter. (Somebody take that and run with it…computers are smart enough to figure that out if told, surely.)
I did most the letters by hand, but a few of the unexpected symbols and fractions weren’t on my template. Rather than re-scanning, I just wrote them by computer mouse and copied them in in the same way as I did the scanned items.
In PhotoShop, you’ll just select the letter with your box selection tool, then click from the edit menu, “copy”, then open the letter you are working on in FontCreator, and hit “paste”. Then, you want to drag the letter to the appropriate guides for the letter, and move the guides to fit the size of the letter. Just drag the dotted vertical lines to do so. You will have to adjust these guides later for good connections, but try to get close on the first pass.
Click from the keyboard F5 to see your progress and learn as you go. You can type there phrases and it will help you see what you need to do to correct. You can also get there from the menu under Font|Test.
Also, if you don’t like the way a letter has progressed and want a fresh slate, it can be hard to clean everything off by selection at times. So, go to the letter screen you are working on, then menu|edit|”Make Empty”…then past in a fresh letter and start over.
“Make Empty”…I laugh every time I see that come up (not a level 10 laugh, but a level 2, “inside laugh”.)
So, you then save it occassionally to avoid crashes and that sort of thing. You install to Windows|Fonts on a PC. Then, if you don’t like it, want to make changes, and must reinstall, you first really need to close any programs where you’ve tried to use it. I needed to uninstall and reinstall several times, and eventually had to reboot the computer to convince it that I wasn’t currently using the font. So, once you uninstall from “Fonts” folder, you can reinstall by selecting from the File menu in FontCreator: File|Save As, then I just drag that .ttf folder you see there with the name you named it down to my toolbar where my Fonts folder is open. You have to wait for the Fonts folder to open or it won’t install your font there for you.
You should have no problems. It was automatically available to my PhotoShop Elements program without a computer reboot.
Good luck!
Photoshop Elements: “Thankful”

This is the John Deere Cake my 12 1/2 year old neice made for our November birthdays! Wow! Homeschooling at work, there. She transported it all the way from Louisville. What a pro. She’s made a couple wedding cakes and a picture I saw of one she did for a shower blew me away. I wish I had a picture of it to show you.
That big ‘ole John Deere was mighty tasty! That is a girl who knows her audience. Her aunts and uncles and cousins went nuts. You can tell we are in farming country! I think there was only one wheel left! And, I’m glad she left the box for it…I needed it to put all my cupcakes in today! She said, “Wow! This is like the perfect kitchen {lovingly rubbing the big, wide bar ivory laminate counter-top}! I just LOVE it! I would have all kinds of room to decorate my cakes here!” My 30 year old kitchen. You know what, girlfriend? I just love it, too! I love every cut in the dull linoleum floors (don’t have to worry about them), and I love the bar, and I love that all the homemade things people have made for us through the year look right at home here. I wouldn’t change much about it. Which is why we haven’t! We would like knew floors soon, but I so love the big square pattern on it now. The former owners picked things that last a while in terms of fashion, and I love that.
Back to the point…
I should take a moment to mention that I am my neice’s namesake…she probably takes all the creativity genes after me (we’re only related by marriage, but what does that matter at a time like this?) Just kidding…her mother is so creative it boggles the mind. She got me into scrapbooking, somehow, though I vowed I’d NEVER do it when I first met her. That was before kids, and before I realized I have a need in my life for paper, and history, and journaling things.
Note the look on Uncle’s face taking in the innards of my computer. I said, “Hey! I only dust about three times a year…”and I was going to say, …”and the inside of the computer didn’t make the list” when he laughed and said, “Well, I can sure tell!”
Who knew the guests would check for dust INSIDE something screwed together? You just can’t win for losing! I’ll bet Martha Stewart doesn’t even dust in there!

Photoshop…How to Grow Stuff “out of the box”

This is a very cool Photoshop tutorial on how to make images grow out of the “frame” of the photo border ONTO the background. Very cool effect for you photoshop people, irregardless of whether you do the scrapbook thing or not! (If you are familiar with photoshop, you can learn it in 5 minutes flat!) I’m still dreaming up my next project where I can use it. I’ll post a link when I do.
You’ll find that handy and clear tutorial here (Click the colored text for linkage). Check it out!

God Grants Sleep to Those He Loves
My Son, Sleeping–
Psalm 127
A song of ascents. Of Solomon.
1 Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.
Or, the Amplified says:
2It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of [anxious] toil–for He gives [blessings] to His beloved in sleep.
There can be physical reasons that prevent good sleep. But, as a principle, Lord Jesus Christ promises His people rest, and is grieved when they don’t ”find it” (see also (Hebrews 4) .
There is a “balance” being ”being” and “doing”. I read the other day on someone’s blog that they were reminded that the English language calls us human “be-ings”, not a human “do”ings.
Do you know how to find rest when you’re weary? I pray for your rest and refreshment in God’s energizing presence:
“I labor with all His energy, which so powerfully works in me”. (book of Colossians, I believe, BibleGateway isn’t bringing it up for me…I’ll have to dig.)

Friday Rest
Today is Friday. Good to have my kids home from school and sleep in today–a vacation. Just ate a peice of left over pecan pie and a cup of Constant Comment Tea for breakfast! (Don’t tell my health guru that I just cannot get myself into the game…I still have goals.)
Thankfully, I just about have my laundry room whipped into submission–two baskets waiting on me always.
Refueling a bit this week, reading Beth Moore’s Get Out of That Pit. I’m enjoying the way she is leading people to understand that normal highs and lows come in life. Somehow, a great deceit as a Christian is to have some perception that it’s all supposed to be the high road all the time–we were never promised anything like that.
An earlier work that introduced meto this concept was “Hinds Feet on High Places”, an allegory by Hannah Hurnard.
With a sick family, I stopped by Psalm readings this month. Perhaps I will pick up fresh with a new month. My Sunday School class is studying Proverbs–I may shift my emphasis there for a season.
Today I need to plan my Sunday School lesson for my second grade class. I teach there every other week (weeks I don’t do Praise Band). Trying to do both at the same time has proven to fall the mightiest.
Tomorrow, a huge get together with my family. I met my new nephew this week! He is SO cuddly and sweet–a good baby. The children are just now old enough to “hold the baby”. So, a huge deal for them.

My husband is beginning to feel better this week…breathing treatments, prayers, and meds are finally beginning to help, praise God!
Our littlest one woke with a mighty cough this morning.
Enduring winter to the end, the theme.
I picked a lovely batch of fresh Easter Flowers yesterday–hope in the air with the coming of spring.
So many prayer needs again in our body this week for health and God’s touch. God hears and is answering! I made this layout as a tribute to answered prayer.
My friend, Carol will soon hear from the remainder of her tests, but cancer has been ruled out! A big praise. Thank you for praying!
Many others I lift up today.
The Gate
In honor of Called to Fish‘s Proverbs study. Today, she wrote on God’s thoughts of thoughtless versus purposeful living– Proverbs 5.

Snow Angels
Thanks for all the sweet get well notes.
Today, I am still having a lot of congestion, but feel better at the moment. I was so achey last night I was afraid the sheets would hurt. I just sleep all night upright in the recliner. And I did not move all night!
The ”flu-like” achiness comes and goes…I’m just thankful for when it “goes”! I’m still trying to decide what commitments to keep and what to cancel this weekend. I’m supposed to be cheer coach for daughter’s team, do an Upward half time devotion, teach SS Sunday, and host a family SuperBowl party here Sunday night we were real excited about. I hope I can keep them all. We’ll see.
My husband has worked all week–the Tama-flu seemed to help him a lot, and he’s just a tough bird. It helped me, too, the community reports he hears of others who have it? Not good. We’re very blessed, he said. Today, I’m just thankful for “time to be sick”. I think in some ways, it’s good for the soul to fight a virus or two every winter. I’m up to about six…but anyway!
It snowed again overnight! No school today. Kids home. Fire warm. Lots of true “playing” that only happens on snowy days. At present, Goldilocks is cleaning out and straightening the art cabinet…her idea: “I just can’t find a thing in here!”.
Yup, we definately need a few more snow days! LOL.
(using Photoshop Elements 5.0. Credits: Snowflake & Star brushes: Photobrushes.com).
Snowy Day!!!
1. Hubby, Me, and Both with the FLU
This is my third day of the flu. I’m starting to feel flush again. I just took some Tylenol. I should feel happy soon.
(Glad you stopped by for a great read now, aren’t you?)
I take some consolation that I feel like Meg Ryan in “You’ve Got Mail”. She was cute with the flu. (Thinking of my last reflection in the mirror…not happening.)
I’m not sneezing and sniffling all day today…a great improvement. Thank you TamaFlu. (My mother didn’t know what that was…I strongly suggest you Google it and find out if you truly have the flu. And for those of you who don’t know your sicknesses, stomach upset and/or a sore throat or congestion and a cold do NOT mean you have the flu.)
2. Snow! Finally!
It snowed today. Less than an inch, I’d say. It’s so pretty to watch. Ya’ll know I’ve been praying for snow for several weeks now…as have my kids. No sledding, but, enough for all three kids to be home from school. And to want to play in the snow. (Did I mention that I have the flu?) I went outside in sock feet and no coat to catch a few pics of them, just because I am such a great mom.
3. My Great Productivity! (and/or Lack Therof)
I cannot make myself do much productive right now on a normal day, and this is definately not a good therapy program. Or perhaps it is. A person can only be so unproductive before they just have to get something done. perhaps I’ll get there.
4. FILE DOWNLOAD MANIA (world’s greatest sick day activity)
- free file extractor
- free legal scrabooking papers, elements
I downloaded 1000 files yesterday. Yup. If you have a lot of files that need unzipping (extracting) at one time, I highly recommend Unzip Them All, a multi-file extractor. Made my work a ton easier, faster…happy girl. (By work, I use the term very loosely…as in, clicking…a lot [something I found I could do while my head was pounding...as I sneezed...a lot...and my nose dripped...endlessly {I'll stop here...I'm running out of paranthetical choices}]).
Anyway, I got lots of freebie scrapbooking stuff to play with for my own personal use, legally. >>> Happy Girl. Lots of good sites out there. (A lot of alphabet tiles come one alpha per each letter, per cap, lower case, number…that’s 82 files per each alphabet. That’s a lot of files).
5. Virus Protection (aka: the fear of downloading files)
I’ve had a lot of questions about the safety of these files. Most of these women really want to make money from sales of their designed lots for sale on the site, so my guess is, they are not going to be downrated sending us a viral file. Others are just addicted to the hobby and love the praise. Which leads me to good virus software to help check incoming files.
AVG was a free online antivirus program I used for years. They decided to go all paid this January. Avast! is the new FREE kid on the block. They offer a free daily updating online viral service that is faster than AVG, doesn’t hang up my email quite to the extent AVG did, and overall, I’ve been well pleased.
6. The flu makes me extremely hungry. FOUR snacks since I started writing. Geez! (Two Lindt Chocolate Truffles [my fav!]–my son’s left over peanut butter and jelly “pile of a mess”, left-over mac and cheese cup….oyster crackers, and apple jacks). I think that was FIVE snacks. Gosh.
7. Fish‘s Proverbs Challenge Gets My Living Room Cleaned!
Personally, I’m wading through Psalms this year, totally blown away every time I sit and soak.
But, when I heard Fish‘s goal to hit Proverbs, I decided to add that (as God led) also. Twice now this year, I’ve utilized devotions with the kids in Proverbs when they’ve stopped listening and started acting foolish. Winter (“Huh? What? Did you say something ? I didn’t hear you!” to everything I seem to say!!!) We are together so much I think they block the sound of my voice altogether. I don’t blame them. I want to do the same.
But, God calls people who don’t listen and don’t act “wisely” –don’t do what teachers tell them, don’t seek good direction and counsel, don’t listen to parents–he calls them: foolish, idiots, and ”bent on hell”. (The Message). The kids were astounded at the “harsh language” as they called it. They had trouble even reading it out loud because we don’t use those words in my home. Yet, I pointed out to them that when they acted as they had been several times today, they were playing the role. I think it hit home some with my 10 yr. old. We’ll see! (It’s a long term investment, it’s a long-term investment, it’s a …)
Afterwards, they cleaned the living room in 5 minutes flat…and I’ve been fighting the war of strewn stuff all week, to little avail! Thank you, Lord!
Scrapbook Max! Review: It Might Be for You
A few weeks ago, I was asked to review “Scrapbook Max!”, a digital software program. I was honored that the company liked the work they’d seen here, and getting free software turned out to be cool. Initially, I was enjoying Photoshop Elements 5.0 so much that I refused; I’m glad I changed my mind. I’ve really enjoyed some features I’ve not seen in other softwares. So, now, I have three programs on my computer, and actually, I do think I will use them all, depending on what I’m doing. and how much time I want to spend.
I think this program would actually be GREAT for a lot of you short on time who’ve asked me, “What do I buy?”
Review
I got the $40.00 (plus $5-6 S&H) full edition program in the mail last week. They offer a free trial on-line you can download, with some features having limited functionality (but, still a great trial, a friend tells me. Note: the trial puts a banner across the bottom of finished product emails reading: ”This is a free trial edition, remove this banner by purchasing the full feature edition.” But, you can try it out and play with it.) If you upgrade to the full edition, they send you a hard copy of the full edition CD in the mail. (I’ve read that this is not clear whenyou upgrade to the full edition–you don’t get a full version download online). I received the full version in about three days.
The CD installed quickly and easily. I was not sure what the program could possibly do beyond the two programs I already have and use, but I was quickly impressed. They give templates pre-made for an entire album at a time (a mini 5 page album). So…I had an album made with it in AN HOUR AND A HALF after loading the program that I was very pleased with. The program capitalizes on a “scrapbook” approach as a forte rather than individual layouts…so they are all coordinated pages–makes it nice & easy to share by email or in a mini album.
Emailing friends/family five coordinated pages takes NO TIME. Hour and a half after loading, five pages is very FAST by any standard.
So, first the PROS:
1. Again, it creates very fast entire “books” (most often 5 matches pages in the set)
2. “Scrapbooks” can be emailed in small size emails format for grandparents and friends to see. VERY easy…just click “email”.
3. Great templates come pre-loaded. You can add more on-line either by purchase, or sharing free files through the Scrapbook Max! community. The program intuitively loads the free elements into proper files for use (just by clicking “open” when the download prompt comes up).
4. There is a fun on-line community and tech support not found in other programs I’ve used. (Someone finally figured out that we need tech support and like to share! Expanding your program it in the evenings makes it a ton of fun. I’m in the community under “Maggie”.) They’ve already mailed an update out this week that sped the program up tremendously. Nice. Many programs, you never get updates until they want to sell you the next version!
5. Lastly, pre-loaded elements and papers are graphically up-to-date with the current scrapbooking trends.
CONS:
- The text has limited modification. Not a big handicap, but I miss it a bit. Those with Photoshop or other programs CAN import text.
- There is only one option for shadowing (though tasteful).
- The file structure systems take some getting used to (file extensions not recognized by other programs, files in two separate places under “Scrapbook Max!” is a bit confusing). Fairly easy to use after you figure out where things are–Downloading elements is easy for even those who know nothing about computers.
- Does not work for Mac/Apple users
Will I Like Digital?
Digital is the up and coming in scrapbooking for a number reasons:
- Toddlers–who wants cutting tools (razors and knives) laying around?
- Mess. Most people don’t have a dedicated scrap-booking “spot” and need it cleared before projects are done.
- Sharing. Digi makes it SO easy either by email, or in printed form.
- “Hybrid” scrapbooking–mixing both digital and texture elements is very popular right now. (Who wants to buy stickers for alpha letters when you have a computer?)
- Graphic design. It just has “cool” written all over it.
(I fall into all those groups!)
Upgrade-ability: There are a TON, of free download-able papers and embellishments out there to help people get started. Even kits not made by this company are compatible with it.
Members of the online Scrapbook Max! community thrive on creating and love to share just the same way people share with them. This particular program also boasts “booster packs” that can be added for a small fee–great if you are looking for something in particular you can’t find for free.
Samples of pages both my friend and I made (she surprised me by downloading the program and giving it a go. She really liked it and got a lot done in a little time!)
WHAT ABOUT PRINTING?
Options:
1. Print the pages in a size your printer can handle, 8X8, 6X6 (they sell specially made slide in books for these at Hobby Lobby that look really nice I’ve recently started using in addition to my 12X12 books).
2. You can mail them off and have the popular 12X12s mailed to you. I like printing smaller digital books. I like printing mine at home–just gotten hooked on the convenience and the quality is great.
Winter–Stay a While Longer!
Red’s fever rose to 103.6 today. Finally got it down. Whew. I saved a Motrin dose for bedtime, so surely that will get us a peaceful night.
On the upside…I made my first paper tonight! Poor seque, I realize.
Fun to start from scratch and build. Now, I’m seeing the Photoshop advantage. Wow.
(I played after I got tired of watching the conjoined twins on The Learning Channel with my two boys, both feverish…can you imagine learning to drive with two heads?!) Started checking out the “PS brushes” did that came in my free digital download kits. Oh yeah, I’m likin’ the brushes!
As I saw this paper taking shape, I remembered this pic I took last winter. The barn stands across the road from our house.
Here was my train of thought: MY FIRST EASTER JONQUIL BLOOMED TODAY AND STILL NO SNOW!!!!!! Yup. A jonquil. Go figure! It’s not been THAT warm! Right outside my garage. It mocks me every time I pull in…No Snow, No snow, ha, ha, ha, ha! In a little sing song tune. Not that I’m bitter, nope, not bitter.
This layout took about an hour, almost as fun as sledding (though I’m still holding out!– They say maybe Sunday! We’ll all be over colds by then, I’m sure.)
