11 yr. old Bianca Ryan: America’s Got Talent

July 27, 2006

The amazing performance of 11 year-old Bianca Ryan on “America’s Got Talent” 6/28/06.  As first, I thought she must be lip syncing, but I think it was my slow connection.  I don’t know how she got that kind of sound of a mic the way she was holding it to the side of her face…some mic.  Anyway…a few moms on the net were wondering your opinion of the judges’ comments.  Tell me what you think?  It’s really worth watching.  If you have time, let it load, then come back and watch it the second time…it will play smooth.  It’s worth it.

She is talented no doubt however she needs to learn to over pronounce her words while singing. I am a singer, she is holding a mutidirectional microphone that’s why you can hear her even when she isn’t right in it. Also you have to be careful about singing right in it when your voice reaches a certain pitch and volume.

  • 2. 5purposedriven  |  July 30, 2006 at 4:25 pm

Yeah. I agree. I just don’t see how she was getting the vocal depth she was getting at times holding it to the side like that. With a multidirectional mic, you usually don’t get that kind of vocal depth.

As to comments on her dress? Any comments? Did her “child-like” wardrobe take away from,or add to the appeal of, the performance as the Brit judge accused? ( Perhaps he meant not “song appropriate”?)  What do you think?

  • 3. Glynn  |  July 31, 2006 at 12:10 am

She is a child so what’s with the comments about dressing “child like?” As far as the mike, she obviously has a powerful voice. I saw nothing out of the ordinary with any of her performance. Pronouncing words will come with more training. She is 11!!!!!! Cut her some slack. In my dreams I could sing like this.

  • 4. Joe  |  August 1, 2006 at 10:29 pm

Overall, she has very good pitch. The under pronunciation wasn’t as bad as i think some of you are making it out to be. There were a few moments of questional intonation… like the ascending line at but she is 1:06/1:07. Some of those pitches were not tuned. The question really is, how many other songs do you think she can sing like this? She had to have practiced the crap out of that tune. She was definately not lip-synching. How did she get that sound out of the microphone? Compression and eq go a long way in post production. The wardrobe comments, in my opinion are worthless. She’s an 11 year old girl, she should dress like one. After all, we’re talking about her SINGING! Hopefully the industry won’t ruin her, she is very, very talented.

  • 5. Joe  |  August 1, 2006 at 10:52 pm

My other big question is, How was she hearing herself on that stage? there were no monitors and i didn’t see anything in her ears. There is absolutely no way she could sing like that without any reinforcement to hear herself. So I’m a bit skeptical about the inguniuty of these TV show performances.

  • 6. Dennis Niermann  |  August 1, 2006 at 11:07 pm

Eventually, she will advance past Celine Dion and Barbara Striesand. She is gifted and phenomenal. If you can’t see that, can’t hear that, you’re not tuned in.

  • 7. 5purposedriven  |  August 1, 2006 at 11:12 pm

Good comments. I agree on the monitor.

They switched camera angles almost too much for me in the first performance for me to know without a doubt it was her singing. I guess I’m a skeptic. There were times it seemed no doubt, and other times I was thinking…they are tricking me.

The second weeks, her hair was down around her face so much, it was hard to tell as well. In a talent show…I don’t want to see the audience and the judges…I just want to see the person do their talent. I wish they’d leave the cameras a bit more still. On “All That”, I couldn’t enjoy watching the clogging for all the change of angels. It was a bit much.

  • 8. Mike  |  August 2, 2006 at 4:50 pm

I could not believe that the judges picked the rapin grandma over her. She is the best talent in the competition, hands down! There is way to much variety in this show… to hard to compare one act to another. It drives me crazy.
That last song she sang was not my favorite, but…. give me a break, could any one have sang it any better? She sounded just like Janis Joplin. Go Bianca!!!

  • 9. Steve  |  August 3, 2006 at 9:27 am

First and formost this is a TV show, nothing more; thus the varied camera angles and shots of judges/audience. The show needs her far more than she needs it. She has been in training for a few years now and is no stranger to the stage, as you have seen. All the issues mentioned are more than likely well known to her via her vocal coach. Once this girl matures into her teen years, and if she remains on track, nothing will stand in her way. I can only hope that she’s not going to be yet another flash in the pan in her younger years only to fade away because she grew up. If I were her parents, I would maintain status quo at this point and let this die down a bit while she hones her skills. It will be hard to live down the ‘amazing pre-teen singer’ syndrome if she’s allowed to ramp up her career to full throttle now, much like child singer/actors in the past. Forgo this instant fame and wait until she is at 100% and she’ll be a star for many years to come.

  • 10. Fran from Australia  |  August 3, 2006 at 4:56 pm

I got sent the clip of her first song. Absolutely amazing, and sensaitonal to see such talent in a baby
Can you all please tell me what happens next as we aren’t getting the show in Oz.
If she got beaten by a granny the judges need their mouths washed out with soap.
How did she go after the second song?
    What’as happening now please?

  • 11. Carmen  |  August 4, 2006 at 1:10 am

I think she was briliant and for those who think it was a act, even I couldn’t have pulled it off the way that talented young lady did.
Stop being jealous that she’s got talent and use have been out played by a 11 year old. Give the girl a break.

  • 12. Tromba  |  August 5, 2006 at 8:50 pm

To any who aren’t sure it was her singing, I assure you it was. She was using common mic technique – pulling away or off to the side when hitting loud vowels.

The production on this show is pathetic – terrible shot choices, hit and miss audio
engineering, but fortunately on her first performance they got it right. In the semi-finals
she was too buried in the mix and they completely blew it on the results show. No reverb,
weird eq, way too buried in the mix. Seemed her mic cut out a couple of times and I’m
guessing she had a hard time hearing herself.

I really liked her semi-final peformance. Piers Morgan was completely off the deep-end saying she “nearly blew it”. It demonstrated she has the ear to do different styles. For the poster
who wondered how many songs she can do like this, probably any song she wanted to.

As far as the judges picking Rappin’ Granny, while I agree it was a ludicrous choice,
particularly in light of Piers making a bunch of noise about “we’ve got to be deadly
serious now, we’re looking for a million dollar talent”.

I believe there’s more going on here than simply objective choice of acts. Though they
gave the impression that these acts were all culled from lines of people who waited in
long lines to audition, not so. A number of the acts have been supplied by talent agents.
Leonid for example. There’s even been a lawsuit over it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the judges have been given certain directives from above. I’m
guessing that NBC had so much feedback regarding Bianca, they knew she was going to get
the popular vote. I have a strong suspicion that the choice of Rappin’ Granny was a nod to
political correctness as much as anything else.

Certainly, Bianca has things to work on, but she’s 11. I believe she’s an awesome talent and
has tremendous potential. We can only hope she has good people in her corner.

I saw a suggestion that I thought had merit – for the next season, they should have 2 categores -
    musical and non-musical.

  • 13. Ronald Pijls  |  August 7, 2006 at 5:11 pm

I am a singer too, for 16 years now I started when I was 14 now I’m 30. I live in Holland and get this video from a friend in my e-mail box. With tears in my ice I looked at it. Please stop making advertising to your self college singers no one can tell me that this isn’t it great. I would only say to the parents of this angel, don’t let her out of your side and take good care of here she will be the new queen of pop !!! Don’t talk about how she held the mice in her hand ??? She’s eleven years old and sings like an angel. The clothes, the entertainment, the looks are the easiest part of a real singer, the voice is the hardest part and that’s great !!!!!! Good luck from Holland

  • 14. bob  |  August 7, 2006 at 10:10 pm

ummm who ever think that she is lip syncing is defiantely retarted. Bianca is my cousin well
second cousin but we r still very close. she has been singing since the age of five
plus how retarted could u get this is a talent competition sooo how would it even be a
possibility for her to lip sync?? when my dad talked to her dad on the phone he said he was surprised to see how like strict they were and he said that they must have checked their cd a million times to make sure that it had nothing but the track on it. she is an amazing singer
and she wasn’t out of tune one bit in this song. and this song def. isnt the only one she can
sing. she has been on the good morning america and she sang on 10! ( its a channel its like
the news or something) and she saNG in a movie. she also won apollo theater.sooo she def. does
not lip sync. if u dont believe she is my cousin then fine but she talked to me earlier today
and said that the america’s got talent video crew came to her house and interviewed her and
she showed them her dance studio and vocal studio and its gonna be on the finals episode!!
well thats all i have to say

  • 16. Bunnie  |  August 8, 2006 at 7:09 pm

I can not beleive some of the coments people have made about this little girl! The girl is talented and if she doesn’t win this compatition, there is something wrong! Lip syn I am so sure! She was just good and some of ya’ll with those comments are just jellious thats what I think….

  • 17. Gary  |  August 9, 2006 at 9:02 am

I think some people here are too young to remember, but she’s singing those songs the way those singers sang them. If they over pronounced the word(i.e., “blood” “mind”)then she does. If they under pronounced the word, then she does. (Remember, Janis Joplin was drunk, stoned, or both when she sang most of her songs.) Bianca is great. What the future holds for her is that she will actually find her own voice and style, and then watch out world.

My vote as the champ is Bianca Ryan.

  • 18. Gary  |  August 9, 2006 at 9:03 am

Whoops, I under spelled that one word. (”word” not “work”) :-)

Mag:  I corrected it for you.  Thanks for stopping by!

  • 19. 5purposedriven  |  August 9, 2006 at 5:05 pm

As a note…I didn’t say I thought she WAS lipsynching. I said with my slow connection, it almost appeared that was AT FIRST.

  • 20. Jean Rush  |  August 10, 2006 at 7:47 am

She was great!!!! You go girl and I hope she wins .. If not it fixed That was her singing live come on people

  • 21. Natasha Hulme  |  August 10, 2006 at 4:45 pm

I grew up with Bianca’s mother and lived down the street from her father.
I have been following Bianca’s career for about 2 years now-
She has been featured in the amatuer upcoming stars at the Apollo Theater-
Bianca’s grandmother raised all 3 daughters and her aunt was the smartest kid in school.

In reference to her mic- the mic in her hand works in tandem with boom mics-
    monitors are present on stage-

I suggest watching the show for the entertainment value and see what develops-

Bianca- is like a beautiful rainbow- you cannot look away.

  • 22. Rob  |  August 10, 2006 at 11:28 pm

Bianca is one of the most impressive young singers I have ever seen. It is obvious that she mimicks exactly the original artist, however the quality, depth and clarity of voice would appear to be well ahead of her years. There is obviously a singing teacher and a lot of practice, My wife and I take lessons and have the advantage of maturity but could only ever dream of coming close to Bianca’s ability.

I look forward to her own style as she advances her skills and hopefully records for us to all enjoy. Well done Bianca! Don’t take too much notice of the critics since they rarely have any ability other than to criticise those who do.

    Cheers from Australia.

  • 23. rena  |  August 11, 2006 at 11:29 am

Talk about talent, this is a God given talent, i don’t believe she needs to work on it at all, with age, her voice will be even more mature. As far as the way she dresses, leave her alone, she is 11. Most of the young girls on stage today have nothing on, walk around like hookers and show all the skin possible. I’d rather look at a little girl, dressing like a little girl! Let her keep the innocence she has right now. My vote is on her.

  • 24. June  |  August 13, 2006 at 5:09 am

Bianca, you are sensational. Your song was played on the #1 radio station in Australia. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing so I immediately went online to watch the film clip. I have it saved in my ‘favourites’ and play it for myself and anyone that will stand still long enough. You are going to be a star of mammoth proportions. Come to Australia!!!!!
    PLEASE!! June

  • 25. nick  |  August 14, 2006 at 5:35 am

all i can say is….i watch the video of the first time she was on the show at least twice a day and cant get enough of it….i still get goose bumps everytime i watch it…..the crowd and judges were just stunned by her singing….she will be a star.

  • 26. Michel  |  August 14, 2006 at 4:03 pm

When she arrived on stage it was a young girl ,when she started singing she was like the black queen ,i’m really stupefied
how an eleven years old girl can give all the powerfull of his soul like the black singer do when they sing .
Of course Miss Bianca Ryan get an amazing voice but she knows how to use it without thinking ,she just give with his fabulous feeling .
I hope his corner will be more intelligent than the judge we said “change you hair change your dress…..” ,Bianca was beautiful with his sunday’s dress ,please leave this girl live his life’s child .

BIANCA is the sole talent in the contest – and what a talent it is! I feel for those of you who haven’t the TALENT to recognize the God-given talents of this child. You will never fully appreciate or discriminate between great talent and medicore, great music and average street pop.

I, too, have watched the video(s) many times – in AWE each time. Through all my years and experiences, I have never done such before. If you have viewed her performance of NOW I’M TELLING…, then you have seen a true prodigy at the dawn of her professional career. That performance would go mutiple platinum ported to a DVD as a single, AS IS. The peformance is that remarkable, if not historic.

Let’s see if America knows the difference between talent and entertainment, although this child covers both bases with aplomb.

  • 28. vikki  |  August 17, 2006 at 7:30 am

My twelve-year old daughter will grow up with Bianca Ryan.

Like the Beatles in my generation, she will always remember the first time she heard Bianca sing.

  • 29. Wendy  |  August 17, 2006 at 2:40 pm

I just watched Bianca’s performance on August 16th. OMG! I had tears in my eyes! (I was praying she’d do better than her 2nd performance; Janis Joplin was definitely not a good song choice). Now, I’m a musician (a pianist and singer since I was 5 yrs old, and really know music and a good/great performance), and Bianca absolutely nailed her first, and this final, performance! Actually, if I to really nit-pick, I’d say her intonation was better in her first performance than in this last one, but really, who cares!!?? When the judges compared her to Liza Minnelli, they were so right. She has the audience in the palm of her hand! Bianca definitely has the makings of a brilliant singer and performer! Does anyone know if she gets coaching/singing lessons?

  • 30. Jim  |  August 17, 2006 at 3:02 pm

as a pre-teen in Chicago i helped set up the stage at a famous supperclub jazz spot that headlined Barbra, Sarah Vaughn, Ella, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and more….I’d sit there in awe as they sang…..Bianca Ryan is a treasure and we all should send blessings and support to this gifted child. Bianca is heart, compassion, and more.

  • 31. DMarie  |  August 17, 2006 at 9:12 pm

Congratulations to Bianca! You worked hard and you made all of us in the Philadelphia area so very proud of you! I was in tears watching you this evening during the Finals. God Bless you and stay on track and stay as sweet and beautiful as you are now. Keep singing Girl~

  • 32. Deb  |  August 17, 2006 at 9:46 pm

She is amazing. I get goose bumps every time I hear her sing. I’m so glad she won. I look forward to hearing her sing many other songs. Congratulations Bianca!

  • 33. Jason from  |  August 17, 2006 at 9:47 pm

Hey Bianca if you ever get the chance to read this I was one of your votes your absolutely amazing. You really hit those notes and I see you going a very long way!! Keep up the good work and God Bless You!!!

  • 34. Sharon from SC  |  August 18, 2006 at 12:27 am

Where do I sign up for tickets to her performance?
    She was amazing! Mesmerizing!
Does anyone know when she’ll be on tv again?
Any morning shows? I’m guessing she’ll be on Regis’show for sure!
I knew she deserved to win the minute I heard her sing.
A star was born tonight. Congratulations Bianca!!

  • 35. Terry  |  August 18, 2006 at 12:56 am

I have also listened to the videos from her first and last performance on AGT. I love them both! Like so many others, I can’t get enough of them and have listened to them over and over and over again.

I saw Janis Joplin in 1972 when I was 21 years old. Bianca does the same thing to me that Janis did. I never really thought that I would ever hear a voice like that again. But it’s not just her voice, it’s her spirit and her love for singing that gives me the goosebumps! ‘I’m Changing’ was just excellent! Bianca, you bless us all. Thank you and congrats on your win! You now have millions and millions of fans all over the world!
    Neat, huh!?!

Magnanimity (derived from the Latin roots magn- great, and anima, soul) is the virtue of being great of mind and heart. It encompasses, usually, a refusal to be petty, a willingness to face danger, and actions for noble purposes. Its antithesis is pusillanimity. Both terms were coined by Aristotle, who called magnanimity "the crowning virtue."

Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of the American Language defines Magnanimity as such:

MAGNANIM'ITY, n. [L. magnanimitas; magnus, great, and animus, mind.] Greatness of mind; that elevation or dignity of soul, which encounters danger and trouble with tranquillity and firmness, which raises the possessor above revenge, and makes him delight in acts of benevolence, which makes him disdain injustice and meanness, and prompts him to sacrifice personal ease, interest and safety for the accomplishment of useful and noble objects.[1] (Source: Wikipedia)
